Native American Indian head designs like this, in Navajo silversmithing have been made on bracelets since the late 1800's, however it is very rare to see them depicted on a belt or pin like this. In all likelihood, they were custom made for the collector who also had a bracelet in his collection with Indian heads on the terminal ends. This belt and pin were collected by Ethnologist *Edward William Nelson (1855-1934), somewhere between 1890 and 1910 while he was working in the Southwest (see photo of him included from 1895). Made from hammered silver ingot, filed, punched and chiseled with serrated edges, and hand stamped face of an Indian on each concho. Also depicted are arrows, whirling logs, and radiant line stamps. Leather is in pliable, wearable shape.
*Edward W. Nelson spent time researching in Alaska as well, and some of the artifacts he collected are in the Smithsonian Museum.
*Provenance from the late Janet Nelson Butler collection, heir of Edward William Nelson.
