Native American Chief head designs like this, in Navajo silversmithing have been made since the 1890s however they were usually done on bracelets, in my 50 years of collecting, I have never seen a belt or pin like this, and in all likelihood, they were custom made for the collector. This belt and pin were collected by Ethnologist *Edward William Nelson (1855-1934), somewhere between 1890 and 1910 while he was working in the Southwest. Made from hammered silver ingot, filed, chiseled and punched to create the edges, and hand stamped face of an Indian Chief on each concho. Also depicted are arrows, whirling logs, and radiant line stamps. Original leather in pliable, wearable shape.
*Edward Nelson spent time researching in Alaska as well, and some of the artifacts he collected are in the Smithsonian Museum.
*Provenance from the late Janet Nelson Butler collection, heir of Edward William Nelson.
