Santo Domingo Depression Era Thunderbird Necklace w Arrows, Circa 1930-40, Length 24”

Sorry, this item has sold.

I have had many of these wonderful Santo Domingo (Kewa) necklaces, but this is by far the coolest one I have seen. Unique in that it has, instead of tabs on each side, arrows! The mosaic on the bird and the arrows is made from leftover chips of turquoise. The red and white plastic was recycled from plastic forks or spoons from fast food restaurants. The black backing was made from battery casings. The beads are made with gypsum scraps from the nearby mines. These necklaces are some of the earliest forms of repurposed art, inspired by the great depression, when most people were struggling to make ends meet. This one is a particularly creative endeavor. Length of necklace 24", will fit over the head.
